The Fresno State Bulldogs were dealt a shocking blow when head coach Jeff Tedford announced that he'd step down for health reasons. Tedford coached at Fresno State from 2017 to 2019 before stepping down due to his health and then returned to lead the Bulldogs to 19 total wins in 2022 and 2023. However, now he'll hand the reins over to associate head coach/linebackers coach Tim Skipper, who was on Tedford's staff during his most recent two-year stint at Fresno State. Fresno State will open its season with defending College Football Playoff champions Michigan on Aug. 31 and Skipper will have roughly six weeks to prepare for what could be a season-long job interview. However, new athletics director Garrett Klassy will also have to consider other Fresno State football coaching candidates throughout the year with football serving as a pillar of the department.

    Top Fresno State coach candidates

One name the BarkBoard staff has identified as a potential target if Skipper doesn't keep the job long term is Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. The 44-year-old played quarterback collegiately at San Jose State, throwing for 4,672 yards and 28 touchdowns in his career. He'd then go on to coach at San Jose State, Prairie View A&M and Wyoming before joining Tedford's staff at California in 2011 and 2012.

Arroyo also sandwiched stops at Southern Miss, Oklahoma State and Oregon around a stint working with Tedford again for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before eventually accepting the head coaching job at UNLV. He accepted a job with Arizona State this offseason after going 7-23 in three seasons leading the Rebels. With Tedford likely still involved with the program from afar, Arroyo's name has already popped up as a potential Fresno State football head coaching candidate. See more candidates at BarkBoard .
