Fresno State football coaching search 2024: Candidates, hot board, names to watch from top Bulldogs experts

After stepping away as Fresno State head coach in December, Jeff Tedford officially stepped down as the Fresno State football coach earlier this month. In his void, Tim Skipper will be the Bulldogs interim Football head coach for the 2024 Fresno State football season and potentially beyond. Apart from leading the Bulldogs in their bowl victory last season, Skipper has never been a head coach at any level during his 24-year coaching career. That has many in the Red Wave wondering if it will just be a one-year stint for Skipper and also inquiring as to who will be the next Fresno State football coach.
Fresno State football has won its last five bowl games and been ranked in the AP Poll the last three seasons. So, it's one of the preeminent Group of Five programs, and its head coaching position would be highly sought-after. P5 coordinators, fellow Group of Five head coaches or another school could be considered candidates for a potential Fresno State football coaching search. If you love the Bulldogs, or just want to know who will be calling the shots for Fresno State in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at BarkBoard.com, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Fresno State .

One name the BarkBoard staff has identified as a potential target if Skipper doesn't keep the job long term is Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. He enters his first year with the Sun Devils after posting a 7-23 record over three seasons as head coach with UNLV. That was Arroyo's first head coaching gig, but he's well acquainted with the recruiting grounds of California and the surrounding areas. He previously served as an assistant with San Jose State and Cal, as well as Oregon, in addition to his stint in Las Vegas.
Arroyo didn't have the easiest landing spot at UNLV, as his first HC job came in the midst of the pandemic. He also inherited a program that was previously led by Tony Sanchez, who made the rare jump from coaching high school to coaching an FBS school. Arroyo can take some credit for UNLV's 9-5 season in 2023, even though he wasn't the coach, as most of his recruits filled that team's roster. This season with ASU will be his 10th as a college offensive coordinator, so he's paid his dues, and he also would bring some NFL experience after spending a year as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterbacks coach.
