Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier makes suggestion for the next 2 teams that should join the SEC

Former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier has an idea of which two college programs should be the next to join the SEC.

The SEC is currently at 16 teams after Texas and Oklahoma officially joined the conference earlier this summer.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey indicated last week at SEC Media Days that the conference isn't interested in further expansion at the moment.

“Well we really had this great session where I talked about, really focused on our 16,” said Sankey on The Next Round Live Podcast . “And our presidents have said very clearly: We’re not going to be to be entangled in legal issues around any consideration of expansion. So, it’s not a conversation. And we’re not going to take our pie and slice it into more pieces. They have to grow the pie."

While Sankey may not be eyeing expansion right now, that could certainly change in the future (as evidenced by his comment about "growing the pie").

If/when it does change, Spurrier knows which two teams would be a good fit to join the SEC.

And it's a couple of programs that are big rivals of Spurrier's former teams.

Spurrier suggested on A Peek Inside Florida Gators Football podcast that Florida State and Clemson (rivals of Florida and South Carolina, respectively) would be good fits for the SEC.

“I think FSU definitely belongs in the SEC,” said Spurrier. “But Clemson sort of belongs there also. But I don’t know if the SEC wants to go to 18 teams. So I don’t know. Maybe the Big Ten would like to have them. Who knows? But it is what it is. I think you just go one year at a time and then after that see where you’re at and go from there.”

It seems inevitable that Clemson and Florida State will eventually leave the ACC (the two programs are currently entangled in a legal battle with the ACC). And when they do, the SEC would be a natural fit. Florida State's rivalry with Florida and Clemson's rivalry with South Carolina would be welcome additions to the already rich history/tradition of the SEC. And, unlike the Big 10's recent additions of programs like Oregon and USC, the additions of Florida State and Clemson would make geographical sense.

College football has been undergoing a significant amount of change over the last decade. And that change is likely to continue for a while until the dust finally settles and we have a new version of college football.
