Steve Spurrier Makes Stance On Florida State Joining Conference Crystal Clear

An old Florida State rival is ready to welcome the program to the SEC.

Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier recently announced his support for Florida State potentially joining the conference.

During a discussion with the "A Peek Inside Florida Gators Football" podcast, Spurrier made his opinion crystal clear.

"I think FSU definitely belongs in the SEC," Spurrier told host Ali Peek Wilbur. ( h/t On3 )

Florida State is embroiled in a court case with the ACC, its current conference home. With the ACC trailing the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 in television rights revenue , it's obvious why Florida State is unhappy with the conference.

Last year, it sued the ACC over its grant of rights and withdrawal fee for leaving the conference early. The ACC's current media rights deal with ESPN expires in 2036.

Clemson joined the Seminoles in the lawsuit. While that plays out, it's unlikely either program will jump to another conference.

Florida State athletic director Michael Alford stated in June that the school would remain in the ACC for the 2025-26 season.

It will be at least two years before we see any movement from Florida State, and if it joins the SEC, a former enemy will welcome it.

Spurrier coached Florida from 1990-2001 and went 5-8-1 against his in-state rival.

The schools split their two Sugar Bowl meetings, including following the 1996 season for the national championship.

Florida blew out the Seminoles, 52-20.
