MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) said a cat died and a family was displaced after a house fire in Gaithersburg on Sunday morning.

Crews said that at about 4:20 a.m., they responded to the 600 block of West Side Dr. for a house fire with people trapped.

First responders said a man and two women were on the second floor. They told first responders the family cat, Prince, woke them up, continuously pawing at the door, to alert them to the fire.

When the people woke up, they noticed something burning, realized they couldn’t get out of the primary bedroom, and stayed inside it.

They called someone who lived in the basement and 911 to alert tell them about the fire.

The person who lived in the basement went outside, grabbed a painter’s ladder and placed it by a bedroom window so the other people could escape.

While they were getting out, the cat jumped out of the arms of one of the people and back into the room before succumbing to smoke.

“The smoke go thicker and thicker, and before I knew, my house was on fire,” said the cat’s owner, who asked not to be identified. “If it weren’t for Prince waking me up, we would all be dead. He truly saved our lives, and I believe he is our angel.”

None of the people who were inside the house was hurt.
