As housing and renting costs rise, people are getting more and more creative, and there seems to be a draw for many to rural areas. One such area is the San Luis Valley of southeastern Colorado, where after subdivision projects failed, 5 acre plots in the high desert can be purchased for relatively cheap. In May 2017, author Ted Conover bought one of those five acre plots to see what off-grid life looked like firsthand, and lived off that land over the course of four years. UPDATE, 7/26/2024: The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed fatalities in a plane crash reported north of Gillette. According to Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds, the National Transportation Safety Board is responding to investigate and additional details will come through the federal agency.
