Red, white and boom: See what area events are planned for Fourth of July
As the nation celebrates its birth, area organizations and volunteers are working to provide residents with several ways to celebrate. Music, fun and plenty of fireworks are all planned to make the day more exciting. Here are just a few of the area activities to help residents enjoy the holiday.
Meet this year’s ‘Knee High by the Fourth of July Girl,’ Traidan Hier
You can take the girl away from the farm, but you can never take the farm completely away from the girl. Traidan Hier, 18, will begin her studies at Augusta College in Rock Island next month, saying goodbye to the home where she grew up on a secluded farmstead just south of Kewanee. Hidden from the highway with a long, winding lane which leads back to a tree-lined pond just outside of the kitchen window and is home to an assortment of chickens, rabbits, cats, a dog, a pony (which belongs to her sister, Daci), and, at one time, goats that liked to nibble on her hair.

A Kewanee Employee Among the Ameren Illinois Employees that Received a Research & Innovation Award
Jeff Berry from the Kewanee Operating Center was among three Ameren employees who received the American Gas Association’s research and innovation award. Jeff Berry, Scott Lithgow, and Scott Hixson have earned accolades from the American Gas Association for their pioneering safety techniques. They’ve developed a new method to detect natural gas leaks by analyzing customer gas usage data. This innovative approach has proven highly effective, identifying 93 leaks in its inaugural year alone. The method not only boosts safety for customers but also plays a crucial role in averting possible disasters, marking a significant advancement in utility safety protocols. This recognition highlights the importance of innovative thinking in everyday operational safety within the utility sector.
New Mexican restaurant coming to Geneseo
Habaneros Mexican Grill and Cantina in Moline will open a new location in the Oakwood Avenue strip mall in Geneseo. The expected opening date is in October. Josue Sanchez, member/manager of Cruz Enterprises, which owns Habaneros, has been operating his restaurant in Moline at the Southpark Mall since 2015. He identified a location to expand his business to Geneseo, leased the space, and started the build-out for the new restaurant.
Hog Days presale carnival tickets on sale Monday, see what’s new to the festival in 2024
Hog Days presale carnival tickets will go out on Monday, July 8, according to Larry Flannery, co-chair of the Hog Days Festival Committee. As in years past, the prices will remain the same at $10 for a sheet of 12. The tickets can be purchased at the local banks of Peoples National Bank, Union Federal Savings and Loan, CSB north and south branch, and the State Bank of Toulon.
Wake Up Tri-Counties John Wirth Talks Francis Park July 4th Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show
John Wirth talked about the Street Cruisers Car Club he started and the Francis Park Fourth of July car, truck, and motorcycle show that he helped bring back after over a decade-long hiatus. The car, truck, and motorcycle show is from 9 AM to 3 PM at Francis Park. Registration for the car show is from 9 AM to 11 AM, and voting takes place from 11 AM to noon. The entry fee for the car show is $10 prior to July 4th and $15 on the day of the car show. Call John Wirth at 309-525-2469, or email [email protected] for more information. The craft fair and flea market are also from 9 AM to 3 PM. Contact Brenda at 309-853-9419 to reserve a spot. The tractor parade starts at Kewanee Wal-Mart at 8 AM and ends at Francis Park. Henry County Farm Bureau to Host “Safety Starts with YOU” Seminar on July 10th
The Henry County Farm Bureau Health and Safety Committee is gearing up for its upcoming community event, ‘Safety Starts with YOU.’ This engaging gathering is scheduled for July 10, 2024, at the Central Bank Pavilion in Geneseo, from 5:30 to 7 PM. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities, including safety demonstrations and health exhibits, all designed to promote well-being in a family-friendly environment. The evening will cap off with a concert from the popular local band ‘3 On The Tree.’ This event is free to the public. Wake up Tri-Counties OSF Healthcare St. Luke Camp Med
Eleven junior high students attended Camp Med at OSF Healthcare St. Luke Medical Center in Kewanee last week. They told RegionalMediaNews.com what their favorite part of Camp Med was. Volunteer Services Supervisor Brenda Streit spearheaded Camp Med, and she won the first OSF Trailblazer: Workforce of the Future Challenge for her Camp Med project. Camp Med was developed to give students interested in the medical field an opportunity to spend a week in the hospital to learn about various departments in the medical field. The program also introduces them to local career opportunities.
