In a spirited and innovative movement, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Cooper City District turned heads during their weeklong National Night Out campaign by transforming their jail into a real-life “Escape Room.”
Yes, you read that right—a jail! This new initiative brought together excitement and community engagement in a way that is both surprising and entertaining.
What Happened During This Event?
On the evening of Wednesday, August 7, residents were invited to step into the shoes of “BSO Strategic Investigation Detectives.”
Their mission? To solve the secret of “The Collective,” an infamous criminal organization, all while being locked inside a cell.
With only 45 minutes on the clock to escape, participants quickly learned that teamwork and sharp thinking were essential. But don’t worry—BSO’s Strategic Investigations Division (SID) set up clever clues around the room to help guide them.
After all, escaping from jail is more fun when you have a little support!
The participants were split into groups of eight and kept under the watchful eyes of BSO staff, who monitored their every move from the Cooper City Real Time Crime Center.
If things got too tricky, groups could ask for up to three clues—a lifeline of sorts in their quest for freedom. After the edge-of-your-seat experience, players had the chance to capture their triumph with fun photos, creating memories that would last long after the night was over.
Emphasis Placed on Connection
From 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., the atmosphere was buzzing with laughter and friendly teamwork. This thrilling event was not just about breaking out of a jail cell; it was a unique opportunity to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community.
"The escape room proved to be a fun and well-received community outreach initiative. We designed it to connect more meaningfully with our teens," said BSO Cooper City Captain Christopher De Giovanni.
He emphasized that the event was fully booked, with a waitlist in less than two hours after it was announced. Now, that’s what we call a hit!
In a time when strong connections between law enforcement and the community are needed, the escape room provided that level of positivity. It underpinned the importance of collaboration between deputies and residents, providing an avenue for joy and camaraderie.
After all, how many law enforcement agencies can say they’ve created their own escape room and invited the public to break out of jail?
"I have never seen a law enforcement agency run their own escape room before or encourage the public to break out of jail! This event allowed our deputies to connect in a unique and joyful way with the community, and that is a good thing," added De Giovanni.
