GAYLORD — Two local firms have teamed up to begin the second phase of the restoration project for the Mount Carmel Centre on North Otsego Avenue in Gaylord.

The Mount Carmel Centre was previously St. Mary Church, which was built in 1900. In an effort to preserve the building, the Mount Carmel Historical Group was founded and the organization purchased the building from the Diocese of Gaylord in 1985. It was placed in the Michigan Historical Register in 2006.

The exterior metal trim will be repainted to reflect the original white trim with gold accents on the four small crosses that are on the front of the building's roof. Pinnacle Abatement & Renovations and Paramount Painting 2.0, of Gaylord, are now working on the building.

A lift has been brought in so there is easy access to the metal trim that has lead-based paint on it. That paint must be removed before the new paint can be applied, noted Jamie Hicks of Pinnacle and Matt Roberts of Paramount.

Hicks and Roberts said their crews have been trained and certified in lead abatement.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work on this historical building to help preserve it for future generations," they said in a statement.

They anticipate completing the project in the next week or so.

In addition to providing space for community arts, activities and cultural pursuits, the building can also host plays, musical performances, recitals, receptions and art demonstrations. It is available for rent to the public.

“We are so very thankful for the community support that is making the restoration of the Mount Carmel Centre possible. Over 90 generous folks have come forward to help raise the funds including grant awards from the Lampert Family Fund and the Great Lakes Energy People Fund," said Anna Jaruzel, president of the historical group.

The Mount Carmel Centre is a qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit. More information is available by calling (989) 858-3652 or visiting the organization's webpage.
