MONONA — In a game where both Janesville Parker and Monona Grove introduced a new starting quarterback and running back, Monona Grove’s Jace Thomsen and Tremayne Habeck shined to start the season.

The pair accounted for five touchdowns as the Silver Eagles won 37-7 over the Vikings in a non-conference matchup at John Klement Stadium on Thursday night.

“We knew this would be a test, obviously it was a heck of a test,” Parker head coach Joe Flister said. “We just have to get better, execute better offensively and defensively.”

After Monona Grove’s first offensive drive fizzled out inside Janesville Parker’s red zone, the Silver Eagle defense forced a punt from the Vikings’ end zone.

Taking advantage of the good field position, Thomsen led the Silver Eagles down the field and eventually scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. The extra point hold would be muffed, resulting in MG taking a 6-0 lead with 2:10 left in the first quarter.

Using the momentum from the first touchdown, the Silver Eagles then scored on their next two possessions.

Thomsen, a senior quarterback, found senior wide receiver Cal Woerth twice, scoring on a 38-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and on a 56-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Sophomore kicker Hans Haffele made both extra points and then made a 35-yard field goal on MG’s last possession of the half to give MG a 23-0 lead at the half.

While Janesville Parker’s defense was able to get some stops in the second half, Habeck found the end zone twice for MG.

Habeck, a junior running back, scored on an 8-yard and 27-yard touchdown run that put MG up 37-0 late in the third. On the 27-yard touchdown, Habeck weaved through the defense, bouncing off tacklers for the score.

MG’s defense was denied a shutout though as Janesville Parker junior running back Jadyn Fraiser ripped off an 87-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Senior kicker Grady Lutterman added the extra point with 2:28 to go, making the final 37-7.

“You celebrate the successes in life and when somebody stumbles, you pick them up,” Flister said. “If you surround yourself with really good people and people that care about you, they’ll pick you up when you are down.

When we have a successful play, we celebrate together because if one dude on this team is successful, we are all successful.”

The non-conference loss gives Janesville Parker (0-1 overall, 0-0 conference) an opportunity to work on things at practice to get ready for conference play which starts at week three.

“We just have to get better in practice, that’s the commitment our players are making,” Flister said. “I told them in our huddle that it’s ok to be mad about this because there ain’t nothing about this we like, but now it’s up to all of us to get better.”

Janesville Parker faces Burlington next Thursday at Monterey Stadium.
