OLEAN — A city native has written a historical book exploring a crucial moment in American history that marked the beginning of the end of slavery. “The Creole Incident,” released Monday by Coldwell & Hyde Publishing, is the book by John Hyde Barnard, of Olean. It recounts the true story of how the Constitution of the United States was saved by select members of the House of Representatives, a small group of radical abolitionists and 19 slaves.

Olean to kick off CHIPS road work in mid-July
OLEAN — Road paving work is set to begin later this month across the city. Benjamin Slotman, director of the city Department of Public Works, reported that milling and paving work on 3.34 miles of city streets is scheduled to begin in mid-July. The work, at a cost of $2.34 million — all through state aid programs — is down about a tenth of a mile from what was paved in 2023.

Oilers fall at Horseheads; Game 2 of doubleheader suspended
HORSEHEADS — The Olean Oilers dropped the first game of a scheduled doubleheader Friday and could not complete the second after taking an early lead. Horseheads took the first game 7-1. Olean led 2-0 in the second inning of the second, but the game was suspended after a delay due to weather. Friday’s Game 2 is set to be resumed Tuesday before an already scheduled game in Horseheads.
