Pa. awards $15.5M in grants, loan for Shinglehouse wastewater work
SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. — The borough will receive up to $15.5 million in aid to upgrade its wastewater treatment facility that feeds into the Allegheny River watershed. Pennsylvania state Rep. Martin Causer, R-Turtlepoint, and state Sen. Cris Dush, R-Brookville, announced nearly $15.5 million in funding Wednesday for Shinglehouse Borough’s ongoing wastewater treatment plant improvements. The funding comes in the form of a $15.38 million grant and a low-interest loan of $112,859.
MOSQUITO CONTROL NOTICE
The Cattaraugus County Health Department may conduct aerial spraying to kill mosquito larvae in breeding areas located in the townships of: Allegany, Carrollton, Great Valley, Hinsdale, Olean, Portville and Salamanca. Copies of maps indicating the proposed treatment sites, together with this notification, have been placed in the Town Clerk’s office in the Towns of Allegany, Carrollton, Great Valley, Hinsdale, Olean, Portville and Salamanca; in the Village Clerk’s office in the Village of Portville; and in the City Clerk’s office in the cities of Olean and Salamanca. Salamanca Dominates Olean to Win 11-1
SALAMANCA, NY — It’s not often that two teams combine for more runs than hits, but that is what happened Sunday night in Salamanca. The Oilers were dominated by the Lizards, who scored more runs than the Oilers had base runners. With a total of eight base runners for the entire game, the Oilers fell to the Lizards 11-1. Oilers pitchers struggled to find the strike zone. Four pitchers combined to allow just seven hits but walked 14 batters and hit four others. Pitcher Matt Marsh suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs off four hits, walking five and hitting two batters. The Oilers are home on Tuesday for their final regular season home game, which is against the Dansville Gliders. It is the team's fan appreciation game, and admission is free. Two New Provisional Fire Fighters For Hornell
The Board of Public Safety unanimously approved appointments for Austin Wheatcraft and Justin Morse as provisional firefighter trainees at their July meeting. Austin Wheatcraft, a 2022 graduate of Haverling Central School, has an extensive firefighting background. Chief Frank Brzozowski detailed, “Austin has worked his way up the ranks and has shown dedication to firefighting and public safety throughout his life. Starting as a junior firefighter, and working his way to senior volunteer firefighter for the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, Austin has shown he is highly motivated and dedicated. His hard-working nature was highlighted during the interview, and last year, he was recognized as responding to the most calls as a volunteer. Our department has a high call volume, and we have great expectations and believe Austin will do well for our department.”

The little borough of Ulysses turned out in a big way for Ulysses Old Home Day on Saturday, July 13. Craft and food vendors lined Main Street and community groups held fundraisers and raffles. The following individuals are scheduled to appear in Elkland District Court, judge James Edgcomb presiding. Dylan James VanSickle, 32, of Sabinsville was charged by Westfield Borough Police with unsworn falsification and violation of the firearms act-sale/transfer. VanSickle allegedly attempted to purchase a firearm. VanSickle answered “No” to Question 21 on Nov. 13, 2023 and the purchase was denied.
