Exceptions approved for downtown hotel
The city of Winona Board of Adjustment (BOA) granted 60 Main developers’ request last week to allow for fewer windows than normally required on some sides of the hotel-apartment building currently under construction downtown. BOA members noted the city’s downtown aesthetic rules are geared toward retail spaces and said the rules may not be as applicable for 60 Main, a residential-focused project. BOA members also highlighted other buildings in the same area with few windows and other projects that received exceptions — or variances — to the window requirements.

Minnesota DNR has added No. 11 to its pool of Scientific & Natural Areas (SNA) in Lake Superior's Minnesota neighborhood, it announced this week. "The new 25 acre Icelandite Coastal Fen Scientific and Natural Area was acquired by the DNR with help from Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Reinvest in Minnesota. The site is 11 miles northeast of Grand Marais and is one of only two known fens on coastal wetlands on Minnesota's North Shore." This aerial view by T. West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.
