Heat waves in NYC, triggered by heat domes, continue to 'heat up'

New York City — What if I told you right now, on the first day of summer, New York City's weather is even hotter than Houston's and San Antonio's?

Expected to reach a high of 92 degrees, NYC's recent heat wave has been one for the record books. Weather forecasters, however, aren't as surprised New York City currently has hotter weather than most southern cities.

Recently large and concentrated areas of high pressure have hovered over the tri-state. By doing so, this keeps the weather pattern stagnant and forms what's called a "heat dome."

These heat domes are largely responsible for NYC's first day of summer being hotter than most cities in Texas. According to reports, these heat domes can last anywhere from a few days to weeks.

It all depends on how long it'll take for the high-pressure system to last.

In the meantime, it'll be a good idea for New Yorkers to take heed of Mayor Adams' "plan to beat the heat and make sure to check in on your neighbors, especially your older adult neighbors, to drink water, and to keep pets hydrated.”

During the heat wave, here's a list of spots to get relief: public beaches, pools, cooling centers and more.
