According to new census numbers, the city’s youngest age group is on a steady decline

New York City — According to the latest census, NYC has a slight issue: each year, fewer and fewer children and teenagers can be found roaming the Big Apple.

As for why the number of New Yorkers under the age of 20 is steadily declining, most experts point to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Social Explorer — the data research company that analyzed the census estimates — the number of children and teens in New York has dropped by almost 200,000 in just three years.

The drop in the city’s under-20 population has been so extreme that some worry it “could potentially affect the city’s education policies and public school system.”

Research aside, some pundits point to the shortage of affordable housing as the main reason for so many families, with children, moving out of the city.

Whatever the case, the numbers say — today's New York City is older than it was a few years ago.
