The Raiders drafted tight end Brock Bowers out of Georgia 13th overall in the 2024 draft, and it has led to people writing off Mayer as a fantasy option. In reality, Bowers will affect Mayer’s outlook, but Mayer still has value as a fantasy option. Mayer and Bowers are 2 totally different players as Mayer is an in-line tight end who blocks and works the middle of the field, while Bowers is more of a big slot receiver who can work everywhere on the field.
Mayer had a quiet rookie season with just 27 receptions for 304 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the Raiders offense was dysfunctional to start the season under former head coach Josh McDaniels. Mayer didn’t breakout under new head coach Antonio Pierce, but Pierce has talked highly about Mayer since becoming interim head coach last year, and it has continued this off-season.
Mayer himself has said he’s having more fun on the field and is excited to get back out. Between Aiden O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, the tight ends should be big targets as safety blankets, and if Bowers is out running true routes, Mayer could be the check-down option. Mayer will not have a monster fantasy season, as Vegas has plenty of options in the passing game and an uncertain quarterback situation. Still, Mayer should surprise this season and have a strong sophomore season for Vegas.
