Schwellenbach among hottest MLB rookies over past month

Former Nebraska Cornhusker Spencer Schwellenbach has been on a tear over the past month.

Called up by the Atlanta Braves at the end of May to help an injured rotation, Schwellenbach had some early ups and downs. However, he’s adjusted quickly and has been one of the hottest rookies in recent weeks.

MLB Pipeline highlighted him on Wednesday for his recent play, writing, “The 24-year-old struck out 33 batters while issuing just one walk over 33 innings spanning five starts. His outright dominant stretch with a 2.45 ERA and a rookie starter's best 0.79 WHIP slotted him behind a group of sluggers, but the 2021 second-rounder's efficiency shouldn't be overlooked.”

He’s collected double-digit strikeouts in each of his last two starts, including his first scoreless outing in the majors , and held opposing hitters to a .198 batting average in July.

Just three years after being drafted — including a lost year due to Tommy John surgery — the former Husker is shining in the big leagues and seems to have earned a spot for the foreseeable future.

In three seasons at Nebraska, Schwellenbach played infield in addition to pitching. Over his time with the Huskers, he hit .282/.405/.423 with 12 home runs and 67 RBI over three seasons while tossing 31.2 innings his final season with a 0.57 ERA and 34 strikeouts.
