Hageman, Timp home runs help South Winn earn state berth
“You should be proud of the game you played and never count us out,” said Warrior Coach Alex Smith in Tuesday’s postgame huddle. Ten years ago, the South Winn baseball team made their debut at the state tournament in Class 2A. Now the Warriors have earned their seventh state berth, the fifth in the last six years after defeating Kee Saturday in the district final and Don Bosco in the substate game Tuesday night.

Avenging last year’s regional semifinal game and a contest earlier this season against South Winn, Wapsie Valley pushed the Red and White out of the postseason Wednesday in the Class 2A Region 7 Semifinal, 9-3. South Winn ended the season with a 22-13 overall mark as the Upper Iowa Conference champions for the second straight year.
Vikes’ playoff foiled by Independence
An early deficit proved to be too much for the Decorah baseball team Friday as the Vikes hosted Independence (14-20) in the Class 3A Substate 3 quarterfinals. It was the second meeting for the two squads this season on Olejniczak field with the Mustangs taking this one as well, 7-5. Decorah ends the season 22-15.

West Fork Advances to State Softball Tournament with Shutout of Hudson
The West Fork softball team advanced to next week’s state tournament with a 3-0 shutout of Hudson in the Class 2A Region 6 final in Sheffield Monday night. That was one of 12 strikeouts by Warhawk junior pitcher Libby Trewin who picked up the win for West Fork. Trewin pitched seven innings in the shutout of Hudson to advance to state.

Sprint Invaders Return to Independence Tuesday for the First Time in Ten Years!
July 15, 2024 – The Mohrfeld Solar Sprint Invaders will storm the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence, Iowa, Tuesday night, July 16. It will be the third time for the Sprint Invaders in Independence. Terry McCarl won both previous events there in 2013 and 2014. The race will be held in conjunction with the Buchanan County Fair.
