Phoenix nonprofit adds to Family Promise Village in Glendale

Family Promise of Greater Phoenix, a nonprofit organization that serves families and their pets experiencing homelessness and the Phoenix Church of Christ, brought together volunteers from Phoenix Church of Christ for a volunteer project at the site of the first Family Promise Village in Glendale.

Volunteers worked to construct a Gabion Wall made of wire and stones to enclose the Family Promise Village, a new container housing property that is nearing construction completion. The community will consist of six-unit, single-story micro-houses.

The Phoenix Church of Christ is one of many congregations lending a helping hand in the fight against family homelessness. Each stone was hand-placed by volunteers or congregation members to build the wall. In addition, small pops of color can be found in the structure of hand-painted rocks from the children of the congregation serving as a time capsule to commemorate the first-of-its-kind Family Promise Village.

“We hope that this will encourage more people to volunteer locally, these events brighten the lives of families going through these tough times,” Ted Taylor of Family Promise stated in a press release. “This Gabion Wall represents the steadfast strength of our families going through the Family Promise program.”

The Family Promise Village is a unique solution to address the homelessness crisis that has increased in Maricopa County by 23% over the past three years, according to the U.S. Department of Housing. They are designed to be easily replicated on vacant properties adjacent to or connected to religious institutions throughout the Valley, creating micro-communities that will add to the region’s overall affordable housing supply.

“These micro homes remove significant barriers to families graduating from human services programming. Possible lack of housing remains a top concern for families and the Family Promise Village is the first step toward ending the cycle of poverty for the next generation,” Taylor stated.

As Family Promise of Greater Phoenix continues its mission of aiding families experiencing homelessness they are seeking volunteers, including congregational groups to host families to individual volunteers to support specific programming and upcoming events.
