Guest Opinion | Jonathan Gardner: Pasadena Unified School District Students Deserve the Best Teachers
For decades, in Pasadena area politics, there has been an undercurrent of feelings about some of our students which needs to be called out and remedied. Following the decades of white flight after the Supreme Court busing decisions along with the rhetoric that has been invoked to block prior parcel tax efforts to invest in PUSD students, we need to turn a final page on that past and chart a new path forward.

Mid Valley Sports Area Top 12
It’s too early for a High School Football Top 10 so let’s go 12. The “Dirty Dozen” if you will. It’s challenging piecing together a Top 10 or even a Top 12 in our coverage area when you have teams that range from Division 2 all the way to Division 14. There should probably be five different lists of the top teams. But we settled on one. All of the 7 on 7 passing tournaments have been played and we’re just a few weeks away from kicking off the 2024 campaign. Here we go.

Maranatha High AP Chemistry Students Achieve Exceptional Scores, Outperform Global Average
As the AP teachers at Maranatha High School in Pasadena, California, begin to delve into the data on their students’ performance on the AP exams held in May, a wave of good news and excitement has started to spread throughout the school. One of the most notable achievements comes from the AP Chemistry course, a notoriously challenging first-year college-level subject. This year, 15 students undertook the grueling, over three-hour-long AP Chemistry exam. Remarkably, while 25% of students in California and globally scored a 1 or 2, none of Maranatha’s students fell into this category. Every single AP Chemistry student at Maranatha scored between a 3 and a 5, with the majority achieving scores of 4 or 5. Furthermore, Maranatha students outperformed the global average on each of the seven free-response questions, a significant accomplishment that speaks volumes about their dedication and preparation.
