GLENVIEW, Ill. — The family and friends of Glenbrook South High School senior Marko Niketic gathered in a special place to celebrate his life Wednesday.

Glenview’s Cole Park is where Niketic and his best friends grew up together, and his friends and family are now planning a garden in the very spot so they, and others, will always remember his legacy of generosity and friendship.

Niketic was just weeks away from graduating high school when he was killed in a violent car crash on Mother’s Day.

The driver connected to the crash that killed Niketic, which took place just a half-mile from Cole Park, is charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence.

“Marco had a way to bring everybody together,” said Gordana Niketic, Marko’s mom. “He’s the glue to our family, and I can honestly say to all the friends.”

Alongside the garden being built in Niketic’s honor, there is also a foundation bearing his name, which family said will turn its focus toward scholarships to help send kids to camp and participate in sports.
