DENVER (KDVR) — If you, like many Denver-area residents, are looking for the best spot to view tonight’s fireworks displays, one popular viewing spot near Golden will be closed to anyone seeking a good view of the metro.

Lookout Mountain is one of the foothills framing downtown Golden and also the home of the Buffalo Bill Museum and grave. The area is accessible through a two-lane, winding road that climbs several thousand feet, and got its name because it offers grand views of the Morrison and Golden area of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain foothills.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that they would be closing Lookout Mountain Road from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. to all traffic, and urged drivers to find an alternate route.

When asked why the closure was instilled, the sheriff’s office was candid.

“It’s related to July 4th. Traditionally, many folks drive up to the top of Lookout Mountain to view fireworks, and it gets dangerously overcrowded for a two-lane curvy mountain road with limited parking,” the agency said in a post to X. “It is all in the spirit of safety.”

The road will be closed from the lower pillars on Lariat Loop to just before Buffalo Bill’s grave.
