Southern California is experiencing cooler temperatures and increased marine layer activity this weekend, thanks to a combination of factors influencing the region's weather patterns. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Los Angeles, the marine layer has deepened significantly, reaching depths of 2200 to 2300 feet as of this morning, leading to widespread fog and low clouds along the coast.

The thickening marine layer is a result of increased moisture from a midlevel speed maximum moving across the central Great Basin, combined with the influence of a deep upper trough over the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, the diffusion of an eddy off the Southern California Bight has contributed to the expanded and persistent stratus cover.

Residents along the coast and in coastal valleys can expect these low clouds and fog to linger throughout the day, with clearing anticipated later this afternoon. However, the marine layer is expected to redevelop tonight, leading to another foggy morning on Sunday.

Looking ahead, a warming trend is expected to begin early next week, with potentially hazardous heat conditions developing in the interior regions by Tuesday or Wednesday. For now, cooler temperatures and foggy mornings will dominate the weather across coastal Southern California.
