Northern California is set to experience a significant shift in weather starting Thursday, bringing cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The National Weather Service in Sacramento has forecasted generally seasonable and breezy conditions for today and Wednesday, with highs ranging from the 80s to low 90s in the Valley and 70s to 80s in higher elevations.

However, a more robust weather system is expected to arrive late in the week. Starting Thursday, a deepening low-pressure system moving in from the Gulf of Alaska will bring gusty winds of 25 to 35 mph across the Sacramento Valley, with stronger gusts of up to 40 mph possible in the Sierra.

By Friday, the system is anticipated to bring widespread cooling, with temperatures dropping well below normal. Highs are expected to be in the 70s across the Valley and foothills, and even cooler in the 50s to 60s at higher elevations. Additionally, there is a potential for showers and thunderstorms, particularly north of Interstate 80, with some snowfall possible above 8,000 feet.

This brief weather shift marks a departure from the generally warm and dry conditions typically seen in late August, providing a cool and refreshing change for the region.
