A bill to place speed cameras on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) has advanced out of the California Legislature and is now awaiting the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom. Senate Bill 1297, authored by State Senator Ben Allen and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, was introduced in response to a tragic accident that occurred last fall on a notorious stretch of PCH in Malibu, known as “Dead Man’s Curve.”

The crash claimed the lives of four pedestrians, all students at Pepperdine University, who were struck by a speeding driver. The driver, 22-year-old Fraser Bohm, was arrested and charged with murder for the deaths of Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams.

Senator Allen and Assemblymember Irwin, who both represent Malibu in their respective districts, wrote the bill to enhance road safety and prevent future tragedies on PCH, which is known for its dangerous driving conditions. If signed into law, the bill would authorize the installation of speed cameras along the highway, aiming to deter speeding and save lives.
