Caltrans has launched a major upgrade project on Interstate 80, stretching from west of the Alameda/Contra Costa County border to the Carquinez Bridge. The project includes replacing the existing concrete median barrier, installing new safety lighting, upgrading guardrails, and resurfacing the pavement to enhance nighttime visibility and overall safety.

Current work is focused on I-80 between the San Pablo and El Portal exits in Richmond and San Pablo, with plans to continue east toward the Carquinez Bridge. The demolition phase has been completed, and while some noise is expected, it will be less disruptive than previous phases. Caltrans is actively monitoring noise levels to minimize inconvenience.

Lane and ramp closures will occur during nighttime hours to limit disruptions, with no full freeway closures planned. Temporary shifts in traffic lanes and new signage will guide motorists through the construction zones.
