After a windy start to the week, residents of Reno and the surrounding areas can expect a brief warming trend, followed by a chance of thunderstorms and a possible shift to cooler, more unsettled weather early next week.

The National Weather Service in Reno reports that temperatures are on the rise, with daytime highs today reaching the upper 70s to 80s in the Sierra and upper 80s to low 90s in the western Nevada valleys. This warming trend will continue through Thursday, which is expected to be the warmest day of the week. While these temperatures are above average, they are not expected to reach excessive levels. However, urban areas like the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden region may experience localized moderate heat risks on Thursday.

In addition to the rising temperatures, smoke from wildfires in Oregon is expected to drift into parts of northern Nevada. Specifically, Lassen, northern Washoe, and northwest Pershing counties may experience smoky and hazy conditions today, potentially impacting air quality. Depending on the activity of the Bear Fire, smoke may also reach the Reno-Sparks area this afternoon.

As the week progresses, there is a low but increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms starting on Thursday afternoon, particularly in the eastern Sierra from the Tahoe Basin southward. These conditions may linger into Friday as a weak trough approaches the West Coast, further enhancing the likelihood of thunderstorms and showers. The highest chances of precipitation, around 30-40%, are expected in the Sierra and far western Nevada south of US-50 and west of US-95.

The weekend will bring continued chances of showers and thunderstorms, along with stronger winds, as the trough moves closer to the region.

Looking ahead to early next week, the National Weather Service is monitoring the development of a significant trough in the eastern Pacific. While there is still uncertainty, there is growing confidence that this system could bring more impactful weather to the region. This could include increased winds, higher chances of precipitation, and a significant drop in temperatures.
