The Golden Valley Police Department implemented a new bike patrol unit, certifying two officers for bicycle patrol duties. These officers will engage with the community in a more accessible and personable manner, actively serving at events including the Golden Valley Pride Festival and Market In The Valley.

“We recognize the need to be closer to our community members and better serve them at outdoor events,” Police Chief Virgil Green said. “The addition of the bike patrol unit will provide us with the avenue to achieve this goal while enhancing our presence in neighborhoods across the city.”

Equipped with reflective gear and siren lights, officers have actively undergone extensive training to ensure safety and efficiency in handling the bikes. The bike patrol unit will patrol special events, neighborhoods, parks, and trails to ensure the safety of residents and park equipment.

“Our officers will continue to perform regular patrol duties including answering calls, issuing tickets, and apprehending criminals,” Assistant Chief Rudy Perez, who oversees the bike patrol unit said.

One of the major advantages of bicycle patrol is its ability to navigate swiftly and maneuver around obstacles and hazards that would impede a patrol vehicle. Moreover, during events, bike patrols can move through crowds and quickly reach different areas.

“Bikes can access areas where cars can’t, and our officers can respond more swiftly compared to being on foot,” Green added. “We know the sight of bike patrol officers will be a surprise for many residents, so we urge everyone to be alert and mindful of our presence when out on the roads. We look forward to better serving and protecting our community through this new initiative.”
