UPDATE (7/5/24): The Town of North Topsail Beach said a search for a missing teenager resumed Friday morning in the waters off New River Inlet.

In a news release to WNCT Friday morning, Town Manager Alice Derian said two brothers had waded into the water, approximately 50 yards from shore. The brothers, from Goldsboro, were swept into the water.

A boater in the area assisted in rescuing one of the brothers. A search for the 14-year-old brother began Thursday afternoon. The search included use of a drone and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, according to the news release.

North Topsail Beach officials said a total of four water rescue calls occurred along the 12-mile stretch of the beach.

NORTH TOPSAIL, N.C. (WNCT) — The Town of North Topsail had their hands full with water rescues on Thursday.

Town Manager, Alice Derian, reported that crews rescued two people from the ocean. One person was treated and transported to the nearest hospital, while the other refused any treatment.

Derian added that they are still looking for a 14-year-old boy who went missing in the New River Inlet. She said they concluded their search for the day Thursday at around 4 p.m. and will resume the search Friday.

Derian said the entire New River Inlet was searched, including surrounding ocean waters and the U.S. Coast Guard also searched by helicopter. The North Topsail Beach Police Department will continue checks throughout Thursday evening.
