Davenport city officials respond to Iowa Oversight Committee inquiry into alleged harassment, settlements with 3 city employees
DAVENPORT, Iowa — The City of Davenport is shedding more light on accusations of harassment inside city hall and settlements with former city employees. The Iowa House Oversight Committee's request for information questioned the City's handling of settlements with three former employees, including a $1.6 million settlement with former City Administrator Corri Spiegel. The City shared its response to the committee's inquiry in an email sent to News 8 on Friday at 2:20 p.m. Chief Communications Officer Denise Hnytka said that the following are the key takeaways from the City's response:

Le Mars Community football had a wonderful offseason leading to excitement around the Bulldogs heading into the new season. Whether it was a 7-on-7 competition, an open field, or working out in the weight room, the players were there and putting the work in. Walls May Need Attention at the Winnebago County Jail
The Winnebago County Jail is in its seventh year of existence. It replaced a jail with a number of issues that have since been resolved and turned into an apartment complex in downtown Forest City. The current jail on the other hand is experiencing typical and very minor structural issues which are being addressed before they become problematic. Winnebago County Sheriff Steve Hepperly described what he is seeing.

Jefferson Man Sentenced to Probation For Not Claiming a Jackpot Due to Owing the State Money
A Jefferson man was recently sentenced to probation for a May incident. According to court documents, 36-year-old Jeremy Andrews pled guilty to an aggravated misdemeanor for third degree fraudulent practices. He had a two year prison sentence suspended and was placed on probation for two years with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. The probation sentence was to run consecutively with another case where he was sentenced to serve 20 days in the Greene County Jail after being convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor for driving while barred.
One Person Killed, Three Others Injured in Palo Alto County Accident
(Palo Alto Co.) One person died and three others were injured in a two-vehicle accident in Palo Alto County Friday afternoon. The Iowa State Patrol says 32-year-old Desiree Angela Sternhagen, of Janesville, Minnesota, was driving a 2013 Kia southbound on 480th Avenue and failed to stop and yield at the intersection with 370th Street. 34-year-old Mathia Kay Nieves, of Emmetsburg, was driving a 2018 Mitsubishi westbound on 370th Street and was struck in the passenger side by the Kia.
Dubuque receives nearly $1.9 million to add electric vehicle charging stations
DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - The City of Dubuque is receiving nearly $1.9 million to install electric vehicle charging stations at five downtown locations. The stations will be Level 2 and direct current fast charger stations. They’re being funded by a U.S. Department of Transportation Charging and Fueling Infrastructure grant.
Racist Flyers at Library Lead to Arrest
The Hampton man arrested for leaving racist flyers at Hispanic owned businesses has been charged with doing something similar at the Cedar Falls Library. On August 13th Cedar Falls Police were called to the library after staff found the flyers on shelves and in a book written in Spanish. The flyers were made to resemble a hunting license and read, in part, “Illegal Immigrant Hunting Permit. No Bag Limit. Tagging Not Required. Trump 2024. Police believe 38 year old Daniel Embree designed and photocopied the flyers. He was charged with 3rd degree Harassment. In the Hampton case he was charged with eight counts of 2nd degree Harassment and one count of Trespass With Intent to Commit a Hate Crime. The Iowa GOP has condemned the flyers.
