The Greek coastguard is allegedly responsible for dozens of migrant deaths in the Mediterranean over a three-year period, according to witnesses, including nine individuals who were reportedly deliberately thrown into the water. Nine of them were among more than 40 people who were alleged to have died as a result of being forced out of Greek territorial waters or taken back out to sea after reaching Greece, a BBC analysis found. The Greek coastguard, in response to our investigation, strongly rejects all accusations of illegal activities. We have been shown footage of 12 people who were loaded into a Greek coastguard boat and then abandoned onto a small boat, by a former senior Greek coastguard officer. When he got up from his chair, and with the mic still on, he said it was an international crime. The Greek government has been accused of forced returns - pushing people back towards Turkey, where they crossed from, which is illegal under international law. But this is not the first time the BBC has calculated the number of incidents where alleged fatalities occurred as a result of the Greek coastguard actions. Out of the 15 incidents that we analyzed, which occurred between May 2020 and 2023, 43 deaths were reported. The initial sources were primarily local media, NGOs, and the Turkish coastguard. Verifying such accounts is extremely difficult - witnesses often disappear, or they are too fearful to speak out. But in four of these cases, we were able to corroborate accounts by speaking with eyewitnesses. For five of the incidents, migrants say the Greek authorities threw them directly into the sea. In four of those cases, they explain how they landed on Greek islands but were hunted down. In several other incidents, migrants say they were put inside inflatable rafts without motors which would then deflate, leaving them abandoned. One of the accounts was by a Cameroonian man who said they were hunted by Greek authorities after landing on the island of Samos in September 2021. Like all the people we interviewed, he said they were planning to register on Greek soil as asylum seekers. "We barely got off the boat when the police approached us from behind. Two policemen dressed in black, and three others in civilian clothes. They were all wearing masks, and you could only see their eyes." "Me and two others - one from Cameroon and a man from Ivory Coast - were transferred to a Greek coastguard boat," he said, where events took a terrifying turn. Mohamed said the raft they were given had a valve that was not properly closed, and his family did not have a spare one. “We immediately began to sink, they saw that...
