ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — When it comes to staying cool in the heat, many people turn on the air conditioning.

There are some families who don’t have that option.

The thermostat inside Beth Delano’s home in Graham is set at 74 degrees, but, unfortunately, it never reaches that number.

“Because it just runs and runs and can never catch up, and we don’t have a lot of trees just across the street that block the sun off the front of the house … Even on the inside, we cover the windows, and it’s still that hot,” Delano said.

Delano is a single mother. She takes care of her son Bobby who is blind. She says their financial situation prevents them from fixing the AC unit.

“I had been sick for a while, and I had just gotten my real estate license, so we’re just kind of starting off again,” Delano said.

Thanks to a box fan donation from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office to the Green Level Community Center, people in similar situations took advantage of a fan giveaway Wednesday afternoon.

Green Level Program Coordinator Derrick Torres understands how important these fans can be this time of the year.

“You got the central cooling. Some houses don’t cool as fast as others, so you’re going to want a fan in every other room if not every room,” Torres said.

Delano and her son were one of the lucky ones. It’s a blessing she says will go a long way this summer.

The Green Level Community Center only has nine fans in the stock now.

If you’re in need of one, you can stop by the center on Thursday at 1 p.m.

    They’re also taking donations.
