Early voting in the March primaries ended Friday with voters across the state and in Young County having one final opportunity to cast their vote.

The primaries had 2,160 voters turnout for early voting, or a total turnout of 18% of the 12,016 registered county voters.

The only two local contested races in the election are for Young County Sheriff and Young County Precinct 3 Commissioner.

Candidates for sheriff are incumbent Travis Babcock and new candidate Dan Birbeck. Candidates for Young County Precinct 3 Commissioner are Scott (Scooter) Philipp, Alan Craig and Dickie “Coach” Scott.

Election day voting in the primary election will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at five locations.
The election day voting locations are First Baptist Church at 501 Graham St. in Newcastle, First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. in Graham, Loving Volunteer Fire Department at 8891 Hwy. 114 in Loving, North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham and Olney Community Library at 807 W. Hamilton in Olney.

Voters registered in Young County can vote at any location during the election day voting period. When casting a ballot, voters can show one of seven forms of approved photo identification which are a Texas Driver License, Texas Personal Identification Card, Passport, Texas Handgun License, Military Identification Card, Citizenship Certificate and Texas Election Identification Card.

Per state law, those who vote with one political party in the primary election must vote in the same political party for the runoff election. If a runoff election is required for any candidates, the date for that election will be Tuesday, May 28. Early voting in the runoff will be held May 20-24.

Following the runoff election, the winners in each party’s primary elections will be that party’s nominee in the upcoming general election Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Early voting in the November election will be Monday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Nov. 1. The last day to register to vote in the November election is Monday, Oct. 7.
