After approving the guaranteed maximum price and executing a contract with Teinert Construction last week, work on the Graham Junior High School new band hall will begin soon.

The GISD Board of Trustees met Wednesday, March 6 and approved the guaranteed maximum price for construction services with Teinert Construction for the junior high band hall addition at $3,118,712. The estimated completed project cost is $3,711,267.28.

Construction is set to begin in the last week of March or the first week of April, according to Superintendent Sonny Cruse.
The board last week authorized Cruse to execute a contract with Teinert Construction and to issue the notice to proceed for the construction.

The superintendent was also authorized by the board to conduct contractual business for change orders or contingency changes on the construction project.

The construction of a new GJHS band hall using $3.66 million of the district fund balance was approved by the board in October 2023. An opinion of the cost and the final construction documents for the new band hall were approved in January by the GISD Board of Trustees.

Harper Perkins Architects (HPA) Architect/President, Glenda Ramsey, presented the near final construction documents for the new band hall at Graham Junior High School during the board meeting held Wednesday, Jan. 17. Ramsey requested from the board to move forward with the current plans so Teinert Construction could receive bids.

JD Coffee with Teinert Construction said in January that he worked with HPA on options and with changes made to the original design were estimating $2.7 million in the approved construction budget, not including soft costs. He said following last week the company moved onto the next steps for the project following the completion by HPA.

“Following our last meeting, HPA and their consultants finished up the drawings and we issued this out to bid the first week of February, ...had a pre-bid meeting here on site at the junior high on 2/15. Had good participation there, and then officially took bids on 2/27 at 10 a.m.,” he said.

The band hall addition will allow for a band and music hall which is sized for a full class performance configuration. It will include an area for instrument and music library storage, practices, instructional space and a director’s office.

Cruse said in October 2023 that using the whole 7,000-square-foot facility as a storm shelter would be double the amount required for the population on the GJHS campus. Half of the new facility will include a storm shelter which can occupy all students and staff on campus.

The board originally planned for a new canopy and band hall at the junior high. The board chose in October 2023 to eliminate the canopy and save $600,000 on the project as well as make other changes to keep costs down overall on the project.
