Grambling State University QB embracing expectations and legacy

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Grambling State University quarterback Myles Crawley was named the 2024 SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. This prestigious honor, announced at the annual media day in Birmingham, Alabama, recognizes Crawley’s exceptional talent and hard work, setting high expectations for the upcoming season.

For Crawley, the accolade is both an acknowledgment of his dedication and a source of motivation.

“It was a great feeling, man. Just to understand that, you know, my hard work hasn’t been unnoticed,” Crawley shared. “I’m just using it to motivate me for the season and for my team. I’m really looking forward to this season, really excited. I’m loving the new staff and I’m ready to roll out.”

Crawley’s journey to Grambling State has been marked by significant transitions. Initially starting at Alabama State, he made the move to Grambling within the conference. Despite facing different coaching systems each year, Crawley has adapted and thrived.

“With all my years of being in college football, I kind of had a coaching change each year. So it’s been great, man. Not hard to adjust,” he said. “Coach Dooley, he loves to throw it. It falls in my, you know, play. So I love it, man. Great experience.”

Understanding the legacy of great quarterbacks at Grambling State University, such as James “Shack” Harris, Doug Williams, Bruce Eugene and Devante Kincade, Myles Crawley feels honored and prepared to step into those shoes.

“How can you not? Whether you go to Grambling or not, you always hear about those guys, because they’ve been impactful, not just for Grambling but for the HBCUs and the SWAC,” he acknowledged. “It’s some hard shoes to fill, but I’m taking on the challenge. I love the pressure; I always had to beat the odds growing up.”

A poignant aspect of Crawley’s journey is his tribute to his late brother, whom he honors with a necklace he wears at all times.

“Wearing this necklace just makes me feel like he’s always with me, you know, take him everywhere I go. So, you know, I’m doing this for him.”

Grambling State’s head coach, Mickey Joseph, praised Crawley’s growth and resilience.

“Myles and I have a special relationship. We had a love-hate relationship in the beginning because I think he didn’t understand what I really wanted with him. But he really improved on his leadership skills. The kids really believe in him now,” Joseph said. “Myles gets it from me, heavy like anybody else, but he gets it more. He accepts the coaching. Myles is a pro. I’m just telling you.”

Joseph also highlighted Crawley’s perseverance amidst challenges, particularly noting his response to the arrival of transfer quarterbacks.

“He just kept working, put his head down and kept working. And that’s all you can ask of him. I’m really happy that he got the preseason honor because I think it’s well-deserved.”
