On Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m., True North Salon is celebrating its 10th year reunion and Barley Bill’s birthday by hosting an adult prom at Rapids Brewing.

Ashley Brubaker, owner of True North Salon, said that the girls at the salon were talking and thinking about what to do for their 10th year of business anniversary. They knew they wanted to create a fun event that the public could partake in. Brubaker said, “We’ve been in business for ten years and we want to have fun. We want to celebrate all of our guests and the community who have supported us for the past years. We want to get weird with everyone. People can take it as seriously as they want.”

'In our weird era,' True North hopes that people get into the event and would like to thank the community by hosting a dance at Rapids Brewing.

They are encouraging promposals and prom traditions for an evening of fun and maybe a change to redo prom. Brubaker said that most adults haven’t been to prom with their current partner or group of friends and it’s a great excuse to dress up– how many opportunities do adults have to dress up that’s not Halloween?

Not only was the event created for fun though, True North Salon is also working with the Grand Rapids Arts Council to raise money for a community art project that would go on the grounds corner of the Old Central School. Participants of prom can go through North and Bloom for their flower attire and 5% of each sale goes to the community project. Rapids Brewing is also creating a spiked punch beer for the event and $1 of every beer is going to the community art project.

Brubaker said that it seems the community is excited about it. King of the Road DJ will be at the dance.

There have even been a few fun promposals– a husband writing a note on his dog’s collar, asking “Will you go to prom with my dad.” The other promposal was splashed on a digital billboard.

Brubaker wants people to come and have fun, “Come dance– with or without a dress.” For more information you can go to True North Salon and Spa Inc’s facebook page.
