Beards and flannel are encouraged for the annual lumberjack-themed run for United Way of 1000 Lakes.

The chip-timed race will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Race day registration and packet pickup open at the Grand Rapids Public Utilities (500 Fourth St SE, Grand Rapids) earlier that day at 8 a.m.

Since 2017, the event—which crosses the Mississippi River and winds through Veteran’s Park—has raised awareness and funds for United Way.

The race starts and ends at the Grand Rapids Public Utilities where runners, walkers, and spectators can enjoy TruNorth Productions in the DJ Booth, food, and drinks at the finish. Free parking is provided.

In addition to the in-person 5K and one-mile course, participants can also opt to join the virtual division and complete their run, walk, or jog on the course of their choosing.”

Entry fees for those ages 13 and over are $35 by September 6 and $40 the day of the race. For those ages 12 and under, registration is $25 by September 6 and $30 the day of the race.

The race packet, guaranteed to early registrants, includes a limited-edition, collectible T-shirt designed by Jenny Farber of Chaotic Beauty Artistry.

Awards will be presented following the race, recognizing top finishers and “Best dressed.”

The Lumberjack Mile & 5K is generously supported by platinum sponsor Paul Bunyan Communications; gold sponsors Arrow Embroidery, Deerwood Bank, Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital, L&M Fleet Supply, Zorbaz; and silver sponsor SuperOne Foods.

Proceeds support United Way of 1000 Lakes’ work to ensure everyone has the resources and opportunities to thrive. Annually, they invest in more than 14 local programs that provide individuals with tools, guidance, and support to build brighter futures with stable housing, financial security, quality early care and education, access to food, and more. In addition to making grant investments, they lead initiatives, such as the Volunteer Coordinators Network (VCN), 2-GEN Nonprofit Learning cohort, and Dental Collaboration.
