PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man drowned while swimming in Lake Michigan near Port Sheldon Township Sunday afternoon, deputies said.

It happened around 3:37 p.m. south of the Pigeon Lake Pier. A 38-year-old Grand Rapids man was swimming in Lake Michigan, about 100 yards out from shore, when he went underwater, said the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Bystanders pulled him ashore and began CPR, deputies say. When first responders arrived, they continued lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies did not identify the man.

On Sunday morning, Holland State Park , about 12 miles south of Pigeon Lake Pier, reported a yellow flag day, with 2-4-foot waves. Grand Haven State Park , about 13 miles to the north, reported a red flag day with waves over 4 feet.
