GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was sentenced Wednesday to life behind bars for a shooting two years ago on the Grand Rapids’ Southeast Side that left two men dead.

The two mandatory life sentences were a foregone conclusion after Kent County jurors in June found Deiontreay Craft, 24, guilty on two counts of first-degree murder. He was also convicted of several gun charges.

The shooting happened in June 2022 following a confrontation near the intersection of Martin Luther King Street and Eastern Avenue SE. Tony Dwayne Vaughn and Freddie James Lusk , both 58, died at the scene.

Investigators say the shooting followed a confrontation between the victims and others that stemmed from what police called a “small and petty” disagreement.

“Your actions in this case are simply inexplicable and this is just a needless tragedy,” Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christina Elmore told Craft before handing down the sentences.
