“It’s one of the best days of the year,” said Thunderhawks senior captain Jacob Troumbly about opening summer camp and getting equipment issued for the 2024 football season just weeks away.

Head coach Greg Spahn and his staff held a three-day team camp this week under the July sun at Noble Hall Field. Camp was an opportunity for his team to get some offseason reps, build cohesiveness, and sweat out the offseason amongst the more than 100 players set to be playing football for the Thunderhawks this year.

“We’ll have to make some adjustments,” says Spahn on managing the volume of players who signed up to play football this fall, maybe even requiring a practice squad.

But that’s the sign of a healthy high school athletic program; when you have significantly more players available than you do positions and roster spots. However, that's a problem for the fall.

For now in the summer, these athletes were able to get their helmets and pads on (some donning their new Q-Collars) and focus on the basics again with their teammates.

Last season the Thunderhawks were 5-5 with Devin Kinkel behind center, but now that the senior QB has graduated, Spahn and staff will be challenged with finding their new signal caller for the upcoming campaign. With the number of players at summer camp this season, they’ll be sure to find one that can lead this team come September.

Fullback Jacob Troumbly is confident in whoever the team finds to hand the ball off to him this fall because of the reps the team is getting right now.

“The technique and muscle-memory,” explained Troumbly of what’s required to receive a handoff. And that’s what this camp is all about.

    “Absolutely,” he said.

Football season is around the corner, and the Thunderhawks are back to work.
