Oregon awaits Supreme Court ruling of Grants Pass v. Johnson

PORTLAND, Ore. ( PORTLAND TRIBUNE ) — For Oregonians awaiting two momentous rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court…well, as of Wednesday morning, they’re still waiting.

With only a week left in its session, the high court on Wednesday sided with President Biden, rejecting efforts by some to limit White House pressure on social media firms regarding the flagging of disinformation.

But the two most closely watched cases from an Oregon perspective didn’t get handed down today.

• City of Grants Pass v. Johnson : The case pits one Oregon town against service providers for homeless residents, who claim a Grants Pass anti-camping law violates the U.S. Constitution’s Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

During oral arguments in April, a conservative majority of the court seemed ready to side with Grants Pass .

The issue is of importance throughout Oregon — and Western States — because almost every town and city here is struggling to come up with a solution to the crisis of homelessness . What Grants Pass is, and isn’t, allowed to do will have a ripple effect in all Oregon communities.
