A man was sentenced last week for the slaying of a 33-year-old St. Mary’s man that occurred two years ago.

Cherron Montril Waul of Great Mills was given a sentence of life in prison for the first-degree murder of 33-year-old Jermell Delontae Jones of Lexington Park.

Waul, 47, was convicted of first-degree murder by a jury following a three-day trial earlier this year.

Waul in early 2022 was arrested for the murder and armed robbery of Jones, whose body was found lying on the ground in the 21100 block of Great Mills Road at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 3, 2022.

“Mr. Waul lured the victim out of his home, then mercilessly stabbed him 19 times, cut him an additional seven times, ultimately killing him,” St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling (R) said in a release. “The defendant left the victim to die in the freezing cold and rain near Great Mills High School where he was discovered by a morning commuter.”

Judge Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.

Senior assistant state’s attorneys Jeffrey R. Maylor and Donna C. Pettersen prosecuted the case. Detective Warren Forinash of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator.

“I want to acknowledge the incredible investigation and thank the entire law enforcement team, to include the crime lab technicians, patrol officers and detectives who worked closely with the prosecution team,” Sterling said in the release. “I’d further like to thank the legal administrators, prosecutors, victim witness coordinators, investigators and members of the Evidence Review Unit who worked diligently with our law enforcement partners to ensure justice for the victim, his family and our community.”
