The Green Bay Packers made a concerted effort during the 2024 NFL Draft to bolster the depth and talent across their offensive line. Three picks were used on offensive linemen in the first, fifth and sixth rounds. Jordan Morgan, Jacob Monk and Travis Glover were selected out of Arizona, Duke and Georgia State.

The additions in the trenches didn’t stop there. The Green Bay Packers continued adding players to the mix in the trenches by signing undrafted free agents Donovan Jennings and Trente Jones out of USF and Michigan.

Given their track record when it comes to developing offensive linemen, evaluators were excited to see Jones on the Packers. He was highlighted as one undrafted free agent to keep an eye on during offseason workouts for the team,

Alas, it turns out that Jones had different plans. After taking part in the team’s rookie minicamp over the weekend, a major change was revealed on Monday. According to the Green Bay Packers official transaction log, Jones has retired from the NFL.

He was placed on the reserve/retired list on Monday, opening up a spot on the team’s 90-man roster this offseason. It was quickly filled by Spencer Waege, who was claimed off of waivers from the San Francisco 49ers.

It was certainly a surprising turn of events as many people thought Jones had a chance to at least play himself onto the Green Bay Packers practice squad. But, he has opted to walk away from the game of football, at least for now.

Jones is eligible to unretire and return to the league should he choose to. In that scenario, the Packers would still retain his contract rights if he wanted to continue his playing career at a later date.

Over four seasons with Michigan, Jones appeared in 41 games, making 16 starts. He was the team’s right tackle down the stretch of their 2023 championship season after Zak Zinter broke his leg and was sidelined.
