The Green Bay Packers have done a great job of upgrading their roster this offseason. General manager Brian Gutekunst addressed their biggest needs, aggressively pursuing upgrades along the offensive line, safety and linebacker spots.

With OTAs underway, the coaching staff is getting a look at other areas of the roster that could need some adjustments. One position that people will be keeping a close eye on is kicker, where a major competition is being held.

The Packers have taken an unprecedented approach to the position this offseason. Last season’s kicker, Anders Carlson, is now facing competition after an inconsistent end to his rookie campaign.

Green Bay brought in veteran Greg Joseph and rookie Jack Podlesny this offseason to compete with Carlson. Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia has done a good job of keeping the competition fresh, but this competition may not be coming to an end any time soon.

As shared by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Bisaccia will take his time figuring out who the team’s kicker will be in 2024. “While a three-man kicking competition is almost unheard of, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia seems content to carry the competition through training camp. “It might be those three, it might be three other ones, I don’t know,” Bisaccia said. “It might be six.”

From the sounds of it, the Packers are going to leave no stone unturned. Down the stretch of 2023, kicking became an issue for the team and they would like to avoid that happening again in 2024.

A lot of the focus during the 2023 season was on Jordan Love and how he would handle replacing Aaron Rodgers. But, it turns out that replacing long-time kicker Mason Crosby was the bigger concern.

Hopefully, that will change in 2024. Not having a kicker to trust complicated things for the Packers at the end of games and would change the decisionmaking and thought process for head coach Matt LaFleur.
