Packers Brian Gutekunst Provides Timeline for Jordan Love Deal

The most important task that the Green Bay Packers have remaining this offseason is working out an extension with quarterback Jordan Love. Both sides are motivated to get a deal done, and general manager Brian Gutekunst provided a timeline on when something could be worked out.
“We’re in those conversations right now,” Gutekunst said. “I think the nice part about this is none of these things are easy or fast, but both parties want the same thing. We’d like to get this thing done before training camp, for sure, and both parties want to get a contract extension done. I think that stability at that position really allows you to have some security with the way we build our team. We’re looking forward to getting that done, but it never goes fast.”
The Packers and Jordan Love are in this position because of a deal signed during the 2023 offseason. Heading into his first season as the starter, the team wanted some safeguards in place in case he wasn’t cut out for the job. It also gave the 2020 first-round pick some security as well.
After a slow start, Jordan Love finished the season with a bang. The Packers made the postseason, as he showed he has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback in this league. He is now regarded as an up-and-coming star and some analysts believe he will factor into the mix as an MVP candidate in 2024.
It will be interesting to see how much money he earns this season. Brian Gutekunst didn’t reveal any updates on how close the teams are money-wise, but both parties want the same thing. Getting a deal done before training camp is ideal because it is one less distraction for everyone to deal with.
For Jordan Love, the massive extension that Jared Goff signed with the Detroit Lions could be used as a baseline. It would behoove Brian Gutekunst and the Packers to get a deal done as soon as possible, as the price tag for quarterbacks is only going up.
Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins, Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars are next up for extensions. If the Packers wait too long, it will only cost them more money as the baseline could move up again with those three players.
