Jordan Love Shares Advantage of Packers Not Having No. 1 WR

The Green Bay Packers have the pieces in place to have one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL. Quarterback Jordan Love showed down the stretch of the 2023 season that he can produce at a high level, helping the team earn a playoff spot.
During that stretch to close out the season, it felt as if a different player was stepping up each week to lead the team in receiving yards. The Packers have done a great job of developing the young pass catchers on the team, as there isn’t a single wide receiver or tight end with more than two years of NFL experience.
The Packers don’t currently have a wide receiver that is going to command extra attention from opponents or dominant targets. That, in the opinion of Jordan Love, gives the team some unique advantages.
“I think you don’t have to have a No. 1 receiver,” Love said, via the team’s website. “I think it works out well when you can spread the ball out and you got different guys making different plays and you can put ‘em in different areas. I think it puts a lot more stress on the defense and the calls that they can get in, so I think in the long run it helps us not having a No. 1 guy, a true No. 1 guy, but I think all those guys can step up and be the one any given day.” (H/T ProFootballTalk)
Last season, rookie Jayden Reed tied with Romeo Doubs for the team lead with eight touchdown receptions. Reed was arguably Jordan Love’s favorite target as he led the team in receptions and yardage, catching 64 passes for 793 yards.
Christian Watson, who many see as the team’s No. 1 receiver, has a rare blend of size and athleticism. Injuries have been a thorn in his side as a pro, but there is optimism that he has found the root of those issues and will be healthier in 2024.
Dontayvion Wicks, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was very efficient as a rookie catching 39 passes for 581 yards and four touchdowns. Some analysts think he is going to push for a starting role this offseason.
At tight end, the Packers will be relying on the duo of Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft to lead the way in receiving. But, they are deep there as well with Ben Sims and Tyler Davis expected to play roles as blockers and on special teams.
On any given week, any of those pass-catchers can lead the team in receptions. While there are certainly perks to having a ball-dominant player such as Justin Jefferson or CeeDee Lamb, there are also positives to how the Packers have gone about building out the weapons around Jordan Love.
