Analyst Gives Packers So-So Grade for 2024 NFL Offseason

The Green Bay Packers made a lot of moves with their roster during the 2024 NFL offseason. Several key contributors from recent seasons were released or departed in free agency, signing deals with new teams.

Looking to fill those voids, general manager Brian Gutekunst was aggressive in free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. The team’s biggest needs, safety, the offensive line and linebacker, were all addressed.

Overall, 15 players were re-signed or signed away from other teams. Eight have landed with other teams around the league and two of their free agents remain available, per Over The Cap.

In the opinion of Seth Walder of ESPN, the Packers did a good, not great job this offseason. He graded all of the moves that they made and gave the team a B-. That was a middle-of-the-road grade, slightly below average, compared to the rest of the league.

“Given their healthy cap situation and win-now opportunity, I would have liked to have seen Green Bay make one more move to aid the roster, though plenty of that cap space will surely be spent on a Love extension,” Walder wrote.

An extension for starting quarterback Jordan Love is the No. 1 task remaining on the Packers’ to-do list this offseason. It is easy to understand some of the hesitancy coming from Green Bay, as Love has only one season of starting experience under his belt.

While some pundits will say they need to see more, the Packers are likely convinced he is their guy. After a slow start to the season, he turned things on in the second half, helping lead the team to the postseason.

2024 will be all about building upon that development. The Packers could be the youngest team in the NFL again, but they already have playoff experience under their belt and a Wild Card victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

This is a team on the rise. As Walder noted, one more move in free agency would have pushed their grade up a little bit. But, this was a good offseason overall given how many areas on the roster needed attention.
