Green Bay Packers Land Darnell Savage Jr. In 2019 Re-Draft

The Green Bay Packers were very active during the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. They selected Michigan pass rusher Rashan Gary at No. 12 before acquiring the No. 21 from the Seattle Seahawks to select safety Darnell Savage Jr.

In a recent post over at Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox re-drafts the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Gary is no longer on the board for the Packers, as he was selected one spot ahead of them at No. 11 by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Instead, with the No. 12 pick, Green Bay comes away with wide receiver Terry McLaurin. How does their second first-round pick go in the redraft?

No trade is completed with the Seattle Seahawks, who stay at No. 21 and select running back Josh Jacobs. The Packers remain at pick No. 30, which was originally acquired from the New Orleans Saints.

With that pick, they are still able to snag Darnell Savage Jr. After some wheeling and dealing, the No. 30 overall pick eventually landed with the New York Giants, who used it on cornerback Deandre Baker.

“The Packers opted to replace Savage with free-agent Xavier McKinney this offseason. However, taking the Maryland product again in the redraft gives Green Bay five solid seasons of safety play,” wrote Knox.

While Gary has turned into a solid player with a bright future, the Green Bay Packers said goodbye to Darnell Savage Jr. this offseason. He signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.

The Maryland product looked like he would be a stalwart in the Packers’ secondary for years to come out of the gate. He battled some inconsistencies but showed flashes of being an excellent coverage player and strong run defender.

In three of his five seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Darnell Savage Jr. allowed 22 or fewer receptions. But, in each of his last three seasons, he allowed a passer rating of at least 100. Inconsistencies like that is why Green Bay opted to replace him by signing Xavier McKinney away from the Giants in free agency.
