Deslin Alexandre A Name to Watch at Packers Training Camp

Heading into 2024 training camp, there are a few positional battles the Green Bay Packers will have. While some positions look set when it comes to their depth chart, players always surprisingly emerge. This year, one of those players could be Deslin Alexandre.

Alexandre went undrafted in 2023 out of Pittsburgh, landing with the Chicago Bears. He didn’t get into any games during his rookie season and was eventually released.

In January, he signed a reserve/futures contract with the Packers and has spent the offseason with Green Bay. In the opinion of Paul Bretl of Packers Wire, Deslin Alexandre is a player who could make some noise in a few weeks at training camp.

“Here’s an under-the-radar name to keep your eyes on. Throughout OTAs and minicamps, I was continually impressed with Alexandre, who was able to make his way to the quarterback on several occasions during team drills, specifically winning with his speed.

Now, having said, the bulk of his reps came with the third team defense – and occasionally the second team when short-handed at defensive end – and in a crowded defensive end room, I don’t expect Alexandre to make the 53-man roster.

However, if he can build upon these performances when the pads are on, my guess is you’ll hear his name a few times this summer,” Bretl wrote.

There may not be a positional on the Packers’ depth chart tougher to crack than the defensive line. They are deep across the board, especially with the change to a 4-3 base from a 3-4.

That means edge rushers such as Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Preston Smith and Kingsley Enagbare are all defensive ends now. The Packers are loaded at defensive tackle with Devonte Wyatt, Kenny Clark and Karl Brooks.

Deslin Alexandre earning a spot on the 53-man roster would certainly be surprising, as Bretl noted. But, he is certainly someone to keep an eye on as a potential practice squad addition should he not make the final roster.

During his college career at Pitt, he was a consistent producer in the trenches. He recorded at least 2.5 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss in each of his last four seasons with the team.

His combination of size and athleticism is something coaches can work with. If any injuries occur across the defensive line, an opportunity will open for Deslin Alexandre to make the Packers team.
