Packers Coach Speaks on Improving Jordan Love in Pocket

One of the major storylines for the Green Bay Packers this offseason has been the contract negotiations with quarterback Jordan Love. Despite seeking a long-term contract, he has been taking part in all of the offseason programs.

Heading into his second year as a starter, Jordan Love has some pressure on him. People want to see him perform at a higher level for longer than an eight-game stretch, to dispel any worries that the final stretch of 2023 wasn’t a fluke.

To ensure that occurs, the Packers coaches have been working hard with him this offseason. A point of emphasis for Jordan Love this offseason has been his footwork.

He has all of the talent in the world, as evidenced by his performance last season. To help him take his game to the next level, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements has been having him focus on footwork to improve his performance in the pocket.

“It’s just more fundamental things,” Clements said. “Footwork and how he moves in the pocket, and we’re working on the drills, working on throwing a lot of routes on air because you can’t have defenders out there at this point. It’s just presence in the pocket, when to move, when not to move, things like that.” (H/T ProFootballTalk)

In previous offseasons, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has avoided 7-on-7 work in the offseason. He didn’t believe there was much of a benefit to it without a live pass rush and defense.

But, his thought process on that has changed. The Packers did 7-on-7 work and it allowed them to hone in on helping Jordan Love perfect his footwork in the pocket.

Clements has been a mainstay in Green Bay for years. He worked with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, helping them during their Hall of Fame careers. The Packers hope he can have a similar impact on Jordan Love, who is supremely talented and hoping to take his game to another level in 2024.
